Northwest Education Loan Association® (NELA®) is a not-for-profit student loan guarantor that works in partnership with schools, community organizations, banks and other lending institutions to help students continue their education. NELA administers the Federal Family Education Loan Program and guarantees payment of loans in the event of default. This guarantee encourages commercial lenders to make loans on favorable terms to students, who often have no collateral or credit history. NELA also provides information and guidance to students and families about access to, paying for and being successful in higher education.

Our Services
Because many college-bound students are also first-time borrowers, NELA provides free informational publications, resources and counseling services to help simplify complex student aid information. Students and their families can learn more about the FFELP loans available to them, as well as develop a better understanding of their rights and responsibilities as borrowers.
In addition, NELA assists schools and lenders by providing electronic services, training, technical support and educational publications. NELA also supports a variety of college access and success programs aimed at increasing the number of low-income, minority students who pursue, and achieve, their higher education goals.
Area of Service
NELA is the designated guarantor of FFELP loans for the states of Washington and Idaho, and primarily serves the Western states. Incorporated in 1978, NELA is headquartered in Seattle.
