It's possible to get college credit before you even go to college. Getting college credit for free while in high school reduces the number of credits you'll need to pay for when in college. And taking college courses before you get to college will reduce the amount of time you spend in school. Here are a few ways to get college credit while in high school:
- Running Start. While you're still in high school, you can take college-level courses at local community and technical colleges without paying tuition or fees. For more information, start by visiting the Web site for the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board. Note that these lists may not include all participating schools, so visit college Web sites or visit the NELA® Centers for Student SuccessSM for more help in finding programs in your state that offer college credit in high school.
- Advanced Placement. You can get college credit for Advanced Placement courses you take in high school and also for your score on a national exam. The Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Oregon University System offer more information. You also can contact your prospective higher education institution.
- Testing Out. Many colleges allow you to test out of certain courses based on your subject matter proficiency. This process allows you to skip a particular course and still earn credit for it. You save by not having to take the course. Colleges typically use your score on the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam to grant college credit. Contact your prospective school for more information.
- Tech Prep. The Tech Prep program allows you to earn college credit for certain classes you take in high school without having to pay for them. These classes usually are technical in nature and can be applied to a technical degree at a vocational school, community college or four-year college or university. Talk to your high school guidance or career counselor for information on Tech Prep. Tech Prep Washington and the Oregon Department of Education offer additional information about this program.
- International Baccalaureate. International Baccalaureate (IB) is a rigorous high school program that provides you with a culturally diverse, global education. Many colleges look favorably on IB graduates and, in some cases, offer college credit for your IB studies. Not all high schools offer an IB program. Contact your guidance or career counselor to find out about IB programs.
